  1. Each grading component is given a separate grading scale (see example below) and receives a separate grade (on a 5 point scale).
  2. The overall course score equals the weighted average of the grade point totals from all of the grading components.

Here is an example of how to compute the final course grade given the following scores on coursework:

Homework

HW #1 HW #2 HW #3 Total homework score
Total possible points 15 15 15 45
Grade received 11 12 14 37

Average percentage score:

82.2%

Grading scale

A:   90-100
B:   80-89.5
C:   70-79.5
D:   60-69.5
E:   0-59.5

Grade points received:

3.22

Current Events Quizzes

Quiz #1 ... Quiz #7 Total Quiz score (best 6)
Total possible points 5 ... 5 30
Grade received 2 ... 3 16

Average percentage score:

53.3%

Grading scale

A:   70-100
B:   55-69.5
C:   40-54.5
D:   25-39.5
E:   0-24.5

Grade points received:

2.89

Regular Quizzes

Quiz #1 Quiz
#2
Quiz #3 Total Quiz score (best 2)
Total possible points 10 10 10 20
Grade received 6 9 8 17

Average percentage score:

85.0%

Grading scale

A:   90-100
B:   80-89.5
C:   70-79.5
D:   60-69.5
E:   0-59.5

Grade points received:

3.50

Projects:  Suppose that you got a 19/20 (19 out of 20 points) on the optimizer project.  With a straight grading scale (as shown above in both the homework and regular quiz examples), you receive 4.5 grade points on the project.

Investment game:  Suppose that you turn in everything on time and do it correctly.  You receive full credit for the investment game, so you get 5.0 grade points here (note that the lower cutoff for an A is 4.0 points, so 5.0 represents a perfect score).

Exams

Midterm #1 Midterm #2 Final Exam
Total possible points 110 110 110

Final Grade Calculation

Grade component

Weight Component GP GPs earned
Homework 0.09 3.22 0.299
Current events quizzes 0.10 2.89 0.289
Regular quizzes 0.10 3.50 0.350
Optimizer project 0.05 4.50 0.225
Investment game 0.01 5.00 0.050
Midterm #1 0.20 3.27 0.654
Midterm #2 0.20 2.20 0.440
Exam #3 0.25 2.00 0.500

Total grade points earned in the class:

2.807

The final grading scale for the class is 4.0 - 5.0 A, 3.0 - 3.99 B, 2.0 - 2.99 C, 1.0 - 1.99 D, and 0 - 0.99 E.  So a 2.807 is a C (actually, the cutoff for a C+ last semester was about 2.75, so a 2.807 would be a C+).

Grading scales for the midterms will be announced after their respective exams.
